5 Signs You May Need a Cataract Surgery

Cataract is one of the most commonly diagnosed eye conditions across the world. Generally caused due to ageing, they can also be a result of a genetic condition, general health, and lifestyle. Adults over the age of 40 are at a high risk of developing cataract. Identifying the early signs and consulting a cataract surgery specialist is important to treat the condition. Continuing on the subject, in this post, we present a list of five signs that indicate you may need a cataract surgery. Read on.

1. Blurred Vision

Blurred vision is the most common sign of cataract. When tissues of the eye lens start to deteriorate, they end up clouding the lens, resulting in a blurry vision. If you happen to develop a blurry vision and prescription glasses aren’t helping, it is advisable to consult an eye specialist for further evaluation.

2. Trouble Seeing in Low Lighting

When cataract fully develops, it clouds the eye lens, making it difficult for the person to see clearly, especially in low light conditions. In some cases, cataracts may also lead to light sensitivity, producing glare and halos. Trouble seeing in low light or experiencing glare when in a brightly lit environment are also common indicators of cataract.

3. Temporary Improvement in Vision

Cases where the cataracts develop right in the center of the eye lens are called Nuclear Cataract. Individuals with nuclear cataract often observe a sudden yet temporary improvement in vision, also known as “second sight”. A blurry vision, followed by sudden improvement, should always be discussed with an eye doctor.

4. Double Vision in One Eye

Double vision generally points to a number of conditions. Having said that, in cases where double or triple vision is noticed in only one eye and not on the other, it may be a definitive sign of cataracts. Clouding of the eye lens is what causes double vision in patients with cataracts.

5. Difficulty Driving at Night

Driving at night would typically mean facing bright lights from the oncoming vehicles. The clouding of lens due to cataract, as we explained earlier, causes light sensitivity and glare. Difficulty when driving at night and trouble focusing on the road, therefore, are also possible signs of cataract and need immediate medical attention.
