The LASIK Procedure

The surgeons at Texas Eye and Cataract use a highly focused laser to reshape the cornea. They achieve this by creating a tiny flap in the cornea and crafting its shape to allow light to correctly focus on the retina. The steps involved in the procedure are as follows:

Preparation

A lid speculum is placed on your eyes to help keep your eyelids open during the procedure. This is done after applying eye drops to numb the eyes and giving a few minutes for the patient to relax. Patients may also get oral sedatives to assist them to relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Accessing and Reshaping the Cornea

  • The first step is creating a feeling of pressure by stabilizing the eye. The surgeon then creates a thin flap in the cornea using a femtosecond laser to gain access.
  • The surgeon then directs pulses of light at the eye with the help of a computer-controlled excimer laser to reshape the cornea.

Replacing the Flap

After reshaping the cornea, the surgeon proceeds to replace the cornea flap leaving it to heal without the need for stitches.

All of this information is important to evaluate which implant and procedure work best for you. We will also test your specific need for cataract surgery in the process.

LASIK Laser Eye Surgery Recovery

LASIK laser eye surgery is characterised by a very short recovery period. Most patients experience significantly sharper vision within three days enabling them to drive and engage in their daily routines a day following surgery. It is, however, recommended to rest your eyes for a while immediately after surgery. Make arrangements for someone to drive you home after the procedure. Patients may experience some minor itching or burning sensation around the eyes immediately following surgery. A check up is often scheduled for the day after surgery and the surgeon may prescribe preservative-free artificial tears and medicated eye drops to combat infection. Patients are also advised to wear UV sun-protection sunglasses for about six months and to avoid swimming or submerging their head in the water for a few weeks.
