What is Ptosis?

Ptosis is also known as drooping eyelids. As the name implies, it is a condition where the eyelid falls below the usual level, covering a portion of the eye and sometimes interfering with our visual function. Severe cases can make you look older or give you the appearance of fatigue and tiredness.
The skin of the eyelids is the thinnest layer of skin we have in the face. As we age, all of the skin in general loses elasticity. This is especially the case of facial skin, and the eyelids are often the first to show signs of elasticity problems.

What Causes Droopy or Sagging Eyelids?

There are many causes of droopy or sagging eyelids. One of them has to do with the natural process of aging. Others are pathological and require medical assistance.
As noted above, the natural aging process can make the skin lose elasticity, and sagging eyelids are often one of the first portions of skin to show a visible difference. Also, the lower lid cannot hold back fat and causes the appearance of bags under the eyes.

What are the Symptoms?

  • Puffiness of bulging of the lower eyelid, usually with excessive skin
  • Reduced upper eye surface
  • Drooping of the lower eyelids causing bags under the eyes
  • Excessive skin in the upper eyelids, making them hang at a lower level
  • Visual obstruction in severe cases
  • Repeated head tilting to overcome the visual obstruction

Pathological causes of droopy eyelids are as follows:

  • Muscle weakening or nerve dysfunction affecting the eyelid muscles
  • Traumatic damage to the muscles or ligaments of the eyelid
  • A congenital weakness of such muscles
  • Eye tumors
  • Muscle stretching after cataract surgery

How can you treat droopy eyelids?

Depending on the cause, we can treat droopy eyelids using different methods. One of the most popular is eyelid lift surgery. It can be performed on the upper or lower eyelid, depending on each case. The surgeon can remove fat and muscle, and then proceeds to tighten the eyelid skin. After surgery, the eyes recover their natural and youthful appearance. This is an outpatient procedure. However, it is recommended that a friend, relative, or caregiver drives you home afterward.
After an evaluation of your facial structure,
Dr Sobti will let you know if the surgery will be beneficial. He will also measure the proportion of tissue that needs to be removed.
Most people with droopy eyelids can undergo this type of surgery. However, certain eye disorders can make a patient not appropriate for this type of surgery. Thus, the initial assessment is important for patients and doctors to evaluate the available options and procedures we can use in each case.
